I just picked up a 1959 Fiat Multipla 600. Well, it's registered as a 1959, but the numbers appear and lights appear to be for a 1957 model. Either way, it's way cool. I'd been looking for an affordable Multipla for Y-E-A-R-S and I'm completely stoked about having finally found it. It needs A TON of work, but luckily, it came with (along with a family of field mice living in the battery compartment) a ton of parts, so more than enough for a few engines. The trouble is, I've never worked on a Fiat engine and wondered if anyone has any leads on a good mechanic in Southern California who can help me out with the more difficult parts. Also, I have a stuck front brake and it appears that finding brake pads may be an issue, if you guys have any leads on those, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks!!

Hi,

Damn! I wish I could have found a Multipla. I just recently got two Subaru 360 Vans. They are pretty cool though. Anyway, where in So Cal are you? There is a guy in Visalia, CA that is a wizard with Fiats (and just about any other foreign car). His name is Chuck Caine and he owns Visalia Imports. He's a good guy and he is one of those rare mechanics that is honest and doesn't try and screw you. Because of this he is a very busy guy. If for nothing else he should be able to source some parts for you. His info:

905 E Acequia Ave
Visalia, CA 93292-6529
(559) 733-5502

I found an excellent mechanic in Los Angeles. Tony's imports on Figueroa Street in Highland Park. Unfortunately, the only mechanic on his staff that worked on 600 engines decided to pursue other interests and will not work on the engine!! He did finish all the brake work, however, and we were able to locate an NOS master brake cylinder, all the brake pads, hoses, etc., so the car is now running on brand new 13" tires and brand new brakes all around. I have the 12" wheels now and will probably replace the 13" once I get a bit further along (anyone need new tires?).

The car is now at a Fiat shop in Burbank, where the engine is being restored. I'm working with the mechanic to find original FIAT parts and have been pretty lucky in finding everything I need. The prices, however, are incredibly high, so keep that in mind once you start restoring your stuff. I've had to bring in some stuff from Italy, so add to the parts cost, the shipping costs and it's crazy expensive.

I finished all the DMV paperwork so, the car will be completely road-worthy in a few weeks!!!

Sadly, however, I will need to sell it due to some investments we're pursuing. That, coupled with the lack of space and other projects, will definitely prevent me from keeping the Multipla long-term, so if you're interested, drop me a note at ape@vespaape.com. If you want to see some pictures, you can check out my site at http://www.vespaape.com. Click on the FIAT link and then on the MY MULTIPLA link.

If you need some additional information for your Multipla, I've posted some pictures and other info there under the ALL ABOUT MULTIPLAS section. I'll also post some additional literature as I have time, as well as pictures of the TON of parts I have in case you need something. If anyone is interested in my Multipla, I'd sell the parts along with it as I'd have no use for it. There are engine blocks, air cleaners, suspension parts, some rubber, glass, bumpers, etc. I'm not sure if I'd separate the glass at this time but who knows. I'd like for it and other hard-to-find parts to go with the car. Anyway, good luck with your restorations and if I can help you in any way, let me know!!

By the way, I'm located near Downtown Los Angeles. The car is currently in Burbank.

March 24, 2006 update:
It lives!!! I drove the car today for the first time. I had heard it running before, but today I brought it home. I drove it from Burbank to the house, which is about 12 miles. I know, I know, not much, but it was a blast!!! It runs s-w-e-e-t! I posted some pictures of the engine on my site at vespaape.com and will post some pictures later on this afternoon on what it looks like now (not much different, just a bit cleaner). It'll be at home for a few days as it's going to the body shop next week. I hope to put it around for a little while this weekend.
By the way, there isn't a microcar ride or anything of the sort in the Los Angeles area, is there? A friend and I have been thinking about organizing some small ride around the city. You know, the usual, pick a nice spot to meet, lunch, short ride somewhere else? Or the other way around? Any interest? Let me know, I'll start looking if there is enough interest (drop me a note at ape@vespaape.com).
Later!

Hi,

Read your posts about your Multipla. We live in Los Angeles, Just got a Fiat 500 a few days ago. But have issues with finding the 3rd gear. Need a Fiat mechanic. Brought it to Tony's Import Service, but like to get a 2nd opinion. What is the place in Burbank called? Or where in Burbank?

Any info would be great!!! Cos we really like to drive this car!

Thanks!

Hi; writing from France : I also just bought a 600 D Multipla
that I am having restaured in Torino/Italy.
Even here in Europe, not all spares are easily avaialable !

You may have a try with the following sources, for which the
most difficult barrier to overcome may be the ... language !
Have a try with :
* www.gardaricambi.com (Italy - his website is pretty poor,
but he may well have good sources, if you ask him and give
full description of what you're looking for)
* and/or with www.autostoria.fr (France)
* and/or www.fiatclassic.com (Germany --> make sure to
click on "600" in the upper right hand side of the
home page, to then access the Multipla spares' catalog).

I may have more to try to help you with, if these weren't
sufficient ... ?

Good hunt, and enjoy your Multipla !

Ciao,
Luca
